VCA Fox Chapel
Animal Hospital
Pittsburgh, PA
Project
Information
Location:
Pittsburgh, PA
Size:
3212 sq. ft.
Design:
Warren Freedenfeld
Owner:
Veterinary Centers of America
Description:
This is one of several Rehab/Expansion projects done for VCA. Half of the
existing hospital was two storied, and was redesigned to accommodate a
vaulted ceiling, reception area.
The entire interior
of the existing shell, which was constructed of smooth faced, concrete
block, required demolition. |

Because
it was necessary for the facility to remain operating while demolition
and construction were ongoing, the basement was temporarily framed, sheathed
(paneling), and provided with basic electrical services in order to provide
a small reception area, exam and treatment rooms. These were removed when
the hospital was completed.

Design
Feature: In "opening up" the reception area into a two storied,
vaulted ceiling, it was necessary to specify a thirty-eight foot, twelve
inch, I-beam at the roof peak, connected and ballasted in the walls by
plated, vertical beams anchored to the original foundation.
Construction
Nuance: The existing building was over forty years old, and included
two additions. Subsequent to demolition, six different variations in floor
elevation were noticed. Several of these were greater than could be addressed
with floor leveling compounds. Consequently, three areas required sulfuring
overlays varying from three quarters of an inch to two and one half inches.
